Language Arts combines elements of reading, writing and spelling. Students who like to compete will have opportunities participate in competitions throughout the year.
Spelling Bee The school Spelling Bee begins in December with a written contest. Top spellers from this round will compete in an oral competition before the entire school, during a special chapel program in January. The school champion and runner-up will then represent the school in an area round, facing opponents from other schools, striving for the opportunity to proceed to regional competition and the state finals. Writing competitions Students are encouraged to enter their written work in a variety of competitions, ranging from Savannah Christian’s own Reflections program to national essay and poetry contests. Many of our students have had work selected for publication or recognized for prizes.
Reading Rewards Program Students are encouraged to keep a record of books that they read during the summer. The Summer Reading Awards Program is designed to recognize those who have been busy reading during their vacation, with certificates and prizes awarded to our top readers, courtesy of our PTF. Reading Quiz Bowl In 2005, sixth grade members of the Reading Club elected to take part in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl, competing with other youngsters from around the state. We enjoyed the experience so much, we are already making preparation for next year’s competition! Students who are interested should simply ask for the list of nominated quiz bowl books, and get busy reading… more details will be available at a later date.
