Mrs. Lester 's responsibilities are varied. They include counseling individual students and groups, overseeing weekly progress reports, conducting parent-teacher conferences, and helping with class-scheduling. She works with students as they prepare to take the S.A.T. as part of the Duke University Talent Search Program. She also sponsors the Peer Helpers, a service organization designed to help new students adjust to the middle school. Achievement testing is Mrs. Lester's responsibility. The annual Academic Awards Ceremony is another project she oversees, along with the annual awards chapel in May. Mrs. Lester teaches Life Coping Skills, a sixth-grade quarterly exploratory. The goals of Life Coping center around the Golden Rule as students learn to cope with adolescence and the many changes and challenges of middle school. Homework is rarely given. Open-book, open-notebook tests are taken twice per quarter, but the emphasis is not on grades, but on growth in Christian values. Students, parents and teachers are invited to make an appointment to speak with Mrs. Lester whenever they wish. Her door is always open!
