Math Memo to All students and Parents

The math department of Savannah Christian Middle School has adopted the following policies concerning supplies, homework, and grades. Please read this memo, keep the information sheet, and return only the last page to your math teacher.

Supplies

  • All work will be done in pencil.
  • All work will be kept in the type of notebook specified by the individual teacher.
  • A red pen will be used for grading.
  • The use of calculators will be determined by the individual teacher.

Homework

The Saxon Math Program relies heavily on the daily use of problem sets. Most of these problem sets will be begun under the supervision of the teacher and must be completed at home. Wise use of class time will mean less “home”work. All work must be shown, including pertinent scratch work with each problem. No credit will be given for “answers only.” Each teacher will give specifics for her homework format. This format must be followed exactly if credit is desired.

NW=NC

All students will write the math “equation for success” at the top center of every homework assignment, classwork assignment, and test paper. That equation is NW=NC. It stands as your pledge and understanding that in all written work, for all math teachers,

“No work equals no credit.”

Extra Credit / Loss of Credit for homework

If a student does all of the problem sets in a given quarter, he or she will receive a three point bonus added to the test average. For every missing problem set (a zero) or problem set missing due to an absence (also a zero until it is made up), a point is subtracted from the test average. Note: one zero equals four missed points due to the loss of the bonus points.

Can you make up these problem set zeros? Yes, up to a point. All zeros due to absence can be made up with no penalty. Just do the assignment, check it, and show it to the teacher. Other zeros can be made up according to the individual teacher’s requirements. It will be the student’s responsibility to submit these make-up sets (and reports, if required) on time. We cannot take instructional time from class to ask for make-up work. You will be told, once, by your teacher when the missing work is due. It then becomes your responsibility to get it to the teacher on time if you want credit.

Grading System

  • Quiz grades will be many, often, and will count once.
  • Major tests will vary by teacher but will be at least every two or three weeks and will count twice.
  • Practice problem sets, which precede each homework problem set, or daily book quizzes will count all together as one quiz grade per quarter.
  • A student with no zeros gets a three point bonus. Every zero not made up will subtract one point from the test average.
  • All of the above counts 80% of the final grade. The quarter exam counts 20%.
