| PURPOSE:
To encourage our children to experience the joy of
reading and to reinforce reading skills.
REQUIRED READING:
Students should read at least ten books on grade
level during the summer break. One of these should be a chapter
book read aloud by the parent to the child.
NOTE TO PARENTS ON READING ALOUD:
Summer presents a wonderful opportunity to
encourage your child's desire to read. Studies have shown that
reading aloud to your child can improve his/her attitude toward
reading and books. In addition, regular reading aloud
improves children's reading, writing, speaking, and listening
skills. Daily reading aloud can generate excitement for books
that we hope will spill over into your entire family.
EXTRA READING:
To encourage students to read more than the required
number of books, awards will be given to students in the fall at a
campus assembly. The more books they read, the more prizes they
will receive!
RECORD KEEPING:
On notebook paper or on the computer, please keep a
numbered list of all books read. If the book is an easy book,
just list the title. If the book is a chapter book, list the
number of pages in the book' we will county ever 50 pages read as one
book. You do not have the record the author's name.
Reading lists are due the first day of school in the fall.
PARENT'S SIGNATURE:
The parent's signature on the completed reading list
is the parent's acknowledgement that his/her child has read or
listened; tot he books in their entirety.
READING COUNTS:
It is fine for your children to read Reading Counts
books through the summer, but it might be best if they review the
books again before they take the tests in the fall. My
suggestion is that you read for fun with out thoughts of a test.
There are so many wonderful books not on our Reading Counts list and
we don't want to limit your choices.
PUBLIC LIBRARY - SUMMER READING CLUB:
We want to encourage you to join the Summer Reading
Club at any branch library. They have lots of exciting
activities planned this year around the theme of "Catch the
Reading Bug." At our assembly in the fall, we will have a
special recognition of students who work with this program during the
summer. Please bring in your records from the library with your
reading list for an extra prize at our summer reading assembly.
