Dick and his wife, Judy, toured the campus one afternoon in September with Headmaster Roger Yancey.
After observing students and teachers in action, the Eckburgs were so excited that they wondered if they
could sign up for school. Their pledge offers donors the opportunity to double their gift, matching gifts
dollar for dollar up to $1 million!
The Eckburgs decided to invest in SCPS after visiting the campus and the school website, reading founders
George and Harold Deane Akins' book that includes the early history of the school (Miracles in My Life by Bob
and Georgia Hill), and reviewing financial records. "We are not giving to buildings," assured Mr. Eckburg,
"we are giving to people."
Born and raised in Amboy, Illinois, Mr. Eckburg retired in 1986 from thirty-two years with United Parcel
Service (UPS). He began with UPS as a delivery driver in northern Illinois after serving in the Army during
the Korean War. He rose through the ranks to become Vice President of Public Affairs. Prior to that
assignment, he was District Manager for the State of Florida and for UPS’s major operation in the Chicago area.
He served with distinction on the executive committee of the American Trucking Association and has been
described as “one of the leading executives in the U.S. transportation industry” (U. S. Congressional Record,
1986, Congressman John Rowland of Connecticut).
Dick is the proud father of two daughters and four grandchildren. He and his wife, Judy, have been married
since 1967. Judy is from Vero Beach, Florida, is a graduate of Florida State University, worked in Executive
sales office for Delta Airlines, and enjoys Bible studies, sewing, golf, tennis and personal fitness. Dick
and Judy are well known in Savannah for their benevolence, community involvement, philanthropy and hospitality.
Mr. Eckburg received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design
(SCAD) in 2003. Savannah-area organizations benefiting from his leadership and generosity include:
