(Wed, 4/2/08) Savannah Christian Senior Matthew “Matt” Ball has been appointed to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Notably receiving a Presidential nomination and a Congressional nomination from Senator John Barrow, this outstanding senior has earned this special dual nomination along with a long list of academic and athletic accolades.
A star soccer player for the SCPS Raiders, Matt will also have the opportunity to continue playing soccer for the distinguished academy. Savannah Christian will recognize Matt’s appointment on Thursday, April 3rd at 2 pm in the school’s Weeks Media Center.
The son of Colonel Daniel Ball who is serving in Iraq and Kimberly Ball, Matt will follow both his father and uncle’s footsteps who are both graduates of the USMA. Matt’s older brother - presently a senior at West Point - has also inspired his dream of going to this distinguished school where the educational scholarship is valued at $450,000. In speaking about his father’s seventeen years of service Matt says, “The courage he has shown has inspired me to follow in his footsteps by graduating from West Point and serving as an officer in the United States Army.”
At Savannah Christian Matt is an AP student and a member of the National Society of High School Scholars and The United States Achievement Academy: Who’s Who in Soccer. This midfielder is a USAA National Soccer Award winner and is also 1st Team All-region and 1st team All-Area on the Raider Soccer team.
“Graduating from West Point will allow me to succeed in life. It is the best choice I can make in order to be successful," says Matt. "Being able to play soccer is just a bonus.”
In an excerpt from his application, Matt had this to say about why he wanted to be a cadet and serve as an Army officer.
“Growing up in a military family and in church I have been instilled with the principals of always doing the greater good and defending those who cannot protect themselves. Going to West Point would not only further encourage and nurture those principles but upon graduation would put me in the perfect position to practice what I have so long been taught.”
