It only took one glance at Georgia Southern University’s campus and Tyler Sumner made his decision to play football
for Coach Hatcher and the Eagle Program. Tyler Sumner, the all-around athlete at Savannah Christian, lettering in
basketball, baseball, track and football, committed to a football scholarship today at the Weeks’ Upper School Media Center.
Surrounded by his friends, family and all of the Savannah Christian football coaches, everyone looked on as Tyler signed
a Letter of Intent, and moved on to the collegiate level.
Tyler has the support of the entire coaching staff here at Savannah Christian. Longtime mentor
and teacher, Coach Barnwell gave a warm farewell speech, “Today, we wish him well as he leaves us. He’ll always be a Raider,
but now he’ll fly as an eagle.”
Picking Georgia Southern over other schools in the Southern Conference, Tyler says that
he’s got some plans in the making for his time as an Eagle. “Following behind players like Jayson Foster who won the
Walter Payton Award gives me a good feeling. Hopefully, one day I’ll be able to put up stats like them.”
Sumner picked GSU over conference leaders, Wofford College and Furman University.
His sister, Morgan Singletary says after meeting the players and the coaches this past weekend, Tyler
knew right away where he wanted to continue his athletic career. Tyler says he feels like he made the right choice signing
with GSU. “The guys at Southern remind me of the guys I play with at Savannah Christian; they’re really cool, and it’s a
team that I just fit in with.”
Sumner’s record stands by itself with 12 touch downs, 276 rushing yards, 2 deflections, and an
interception in his pocket. In 2007 Tyler was given numerous football accolades including Region 2AA Player of the Year,
WTOC Super 11 Player and WTOC Player of the Week. Sumner has also received recognition with the Savannah
Quarterback Club, and named Player of the Week in his 2007 season. He has been named the 2007
Most Valuable Player by his teammates at SCPS, and will prove to be a great asset to the Eagle Program.
