Four Savannah Christian Preparatory School (SCPS) senior football players will be taking their athletic skill and academic preparedness to the next level next season. The four recently signed letters of intent to play football at three college and universities in the Southeastern United States.

William “Billy” Welch was selected Lineman of the Week by the Savannah Quarterback Club, 1st Team All-Region, 2nd Team All-Coastal Empire, and selected as Defensive Lineman of the Year by SCPS. While lettering in football the last two years, he has also been honored for his academic success as an honors and high honors student. He will be playing for Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina and looks forward to earning a degree in political science with future plans to become a lawyer. The son of Celia and Joey Norris of Fleming, Georgia and Martin Welch of Midway, Georgia, Billy will have a fellow Raider teammate with him at Presbyterian College, Bo Ballance.

Bo Ballance has been recognized numerous times for his athletic prowess both in football, track and basketball particularly with his nomination for the Ashley Dearing Award in tenth, eleventh and in twelfth grades. An All Region team member for the last three years, Bo is also active in other areas such as music, theatrical productions, clubs and volunteering extensively in the community. Looking on as he signed were his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Sidney Smith, as he committed to play for Presbyterian College, who moves to Division I play next season. He hopes to pursue a degree in education thanks to the tremendous teachers and coaching staff that has positively impacted his life thus far.

James Hinely committed to play football for North Greenville University in Tigerville, South Carolina. He met with the Crusaders offensive line coach Todd Jackson and is expected to play offensive guard on their second line. James has not decided on a major, but he is excited about playing for NGU. At 6' and 300 lbs he will be one of the biggest players on their team. His parents, Richard and Sue Hinely of Savannah, Georgia, credit Coach Chumley and his staff, as well as Savannah Christian, for preparing him for college athletics and academics.

Matt Royal has attended SCPS since the 5th grade and signed to play for LaGrange College in LaGrange Georgia. Playing tight end in 2005 and defensive tackle in 2006, Matt has been recognized on the 1st Team All Academic Region 2 Class AA, and twice on the Honorable Mention Region 2 Class AA teams. He has earned the Coach’s Award, for both football and basketball, as well as lettered in both sports. His parents, Michael and Catherine Royal, looked on as he signed his letter of intent to play football at LaGrange where he will major in pre-pharmacy studies in the college’s quaint community and pleasant atmosphere.
