SCPS students reviewed college and ensemble information at Liberty's booth in the gym
The Liberty University Wind Ensemble performed for SCPS Upper School students on Monday, March 12th. The ensemble tours each spring throughout the Eastern United States, from New York to Miami, and from St. Louis to New Orleans. Tour stops this year included churches and schools in Georgia, Florida, and Virginia, as well as concert at Galaxy Palace Theater at Disney World in Orlando. The ensemble is comprised of approximately 60 college students studying a variety of majors at Liberty University.

The Wind Ensemble performs a wide variety of music that appeals to a diverse audience. Over the past four years, the Liberty University Wind Ensemble produced five CDs: “Heroes,” “In the Spring,” “Journey into the Imagination,” “Tam O’Shanter” and "Bandancing."

The ensemble played some selections from the following repertoire during the concert:

  • Spin Cycle by Scott Lindroth
  • Adagio by Samuel Barber
  • Blue Shades by Frank Ticheli
  • Valdres by Johannes Hanssen
  • The Planets: Mars by Gustov Holst
  • Escape by Jesse Argenziano
  • Escape From Plato’s Cave by Stephen Melillo
  • No Shadow of Turning by David Gillingham

The Liberty University Wind Ensemble is under the leadership of Dr. Stephen Kerr, Director of Bands. Dr. Kerr was appointed Director of Bands at Liberty University in 2000. Dr. Kerr received his B.S. degree in Music Education from Liberty University in 1982. He holds the M.A. degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Virginia Tech. and the Ph.D. degree in Music Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
