This presentation will focus on the Siege of Savannah with particular emphasis on the fighting that took place
at Shaw’s Dam from December 10-12, 1864. There will also be discussion of the role of the Ogeechee Canal and
Mulberry Grove Plantation in these events. Using Official records, letters and memoirs, we will follow the real life
experiences of men who fought (and in some cases died) at or near Shaw’s Dam during those desperate days.
These include Berrien Zettler, Colonel C. C. Jones, W.H. Mendel, Major Ferdinand Cook, W.H. Andrews and General J. Lewis
and others.
Following the presentation there will be an optional tour of the Union and Confederate trench lines involved in the
fighting which are still extant on school grounds. (In the event of rain please dress appropriately).
