Mrs. Ivey’s fifth grade campout at Oatland Island on January 25th and 26th was very successful.
All twenty-four students, Mrs. Ivey, and Miss Pike braved a record cold 24 degree night in tents
(4 degrees colder than last year's record-breaking 5th grade class trip).
The purpose of the campout was to learn group cooperation. Their first class of the day consisted
of a series of challenges designed to have small groups come up with a plan to accomplish the task
and find a group leader. They set up their tents around the campfire, gathered firewood and made a fire,
cooked their own food, and went to lots of classes on animal classification and endangered species.
They also took a night hike through the woods without flashlights and located constellations.
When asked “What did you learn about yourself while camping?”, student replies included:
"I learned that I can listen to others." "I am a great leader." "I can balance better than I thought."
"I need to step back sometimes and let others help." "I can do anything if I put my mind to it."
Our class was divided into four groups of six students each. Our Blue Team (Ryan Su, Matt Hill, Jacquelyn Kennedy,
Amanda Mixon, Tony Ellssessor, and Trey Jackson) were the overall winners of our contests.
