Former SCPS Lower School teacher Peggy Jones has announced the release of her debut CD, “Billie Tales,” calling it a collaboration of three generations. Most of the tales, written by Jones, are based on the stories of her father, W. C. “Little Willy” King, a reporter, columnist, cartoonist and photographer for The Chattanooga Times Newspaper for over fifty years. Mark Reynolds, her son, arranged and performed the music as well as designing the cover art.
Jones, now an elementary teacher with the Cleveland, (TN) City Schools, received the M. Ed. degree in Reading and Storytelling from East Tennessee State University in 1998. She says, “My late husband, Wes, was very supportive, but still, living in the dorm when you’re 50 is not like living there at 18.”
Over the years, a common question from her students has been, “Is that story true?” The answer is always, “There’s truth in it.” “Sometimes I get the same question from adult listeners. Every story offers an insight that the listener must find for himself or herself.”
Mrs. Jones is affiliated with the Cleveland Storytelling Guild and credits the Guild members with her growth as a teller. “When I moved to Savannah nine years ago, the Guild had about eight members. I stayed in touch by e-mail and was so pleased with the activities they sponsored. When I moved back to Cleveland last summer, I found that membership had grown to well over 30 enthusiastic tellers and listeners.” She is also a member of the Southern Order of Storytellers and the National Storytelling Network. Her stories have delighted audiences of all ages.
