Sports Camp SCPS held their first PowerZone Sports Camp this summer in two four-day sessions for children ages 7-13. The camp was facilitated by Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Area Director and SCPS parent Ed Pulkinen, and led by coaches and assistants Ashley Barnwell, Toy Byrd, Mark Carlton, Carl Carter, Hunter Chadwick, Donald Chumley, DeDe Coulter, Julie Jones, Harry Miles, Beth Sasser, Kevin Wetmore and Marshall Wood.

The three-hour daily camp included morning devotions, two sessions (separated by a snack break) for students to play baseball, football, soccer, softball, track or volleyball, and homework for the HEART that included an introductory story, prayer suggestions, scripture reading and thought-provoking questions. More than 170 campers joined in the fun and games and devotional exercises.

Sports Camp Mr. Pulkinen joined FCA full-time this past year and has grown the number of certified campuses in Chatham, Bryan, Effingham and Jasper counties from 0 to 19. Weekly FCA meetings during the school year are called “huddles.” SCPS huddles are scheduled for Wednesdays at the Upper School under the leadership of Barry Moore, and on Mondays at DeRenne campus under the leadership of Troy Brantley.

Pulkinen says he joined FCA because it combines two of his greatest loves and passions – Jesus Christ and sports. His father, Carl “Spook” Pulkinen was a Hall of Fame boxer and track star at Clemson University and a Golden Glove champ in the military. Pulkinen says he learned to respect his father because “he could run me down and tear me up.” However, his father did not come to know Christ until shortly before commitment to love and serve the Lord.
