Dewey Hooper, Lower School Physical Education teacher on Chatham Parkway, is committed to leading SCPS in raising
tens of thousands of dollars for the American Heart Association through the annual Jump Rope for Heart.
To motivate his students, Hooper has presented various challenges with rewards for surpassing certain goals,
including wearing a girl’s uniform to school and shaving his head. So, what to do for an encore?
Crawl to school, of course!
This year, Mr. Hooper committed to crawling to school if his students raised at least $18,000.
The students responded by raising more than $26,000, surpassing their goal by more than 40%!
On Super Saturday, April 22nd, Mr. Hooper began his 3-mile, back-breaking journey from the intersection of
Ogeechee Road (Highway 17) and Chatham Parkway, with a voluntary escort provided by
Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Star Cpl. William Schaffer, parent of SCPS 2nd grader William Schaffer.
With several miles to go and only a few inches of knee pads
to protect him, Mr. Hooper made the journey in just over 3 hours to find dozens of students and their families
lining the school entrance to welcome him to the SCPS campus.
So, Mr. Hooper, what are you going to do next year? We are all waiting to find out!
