Last year, Savannah College of Art and Design President Paula S. Wallace announced the donation of $1 million by philanthropist and community leader Richard D. Eckburg and his wife Judy for the establishment of the Eckburg Scholars program at SCAD. The scholarships soon will be awarded to five incoming SCAD students for the 2006-07 academic year who demonstrate perseverance, self-motivation and dedication. Preference shall be given to graduates of Savannah Christian Preparatory School.
“Richard D. Eckburg’s success in life is testament to the value of hard work, perseverance and self-motivation,” said Wallace. “Through his generosity, five outstanding undergraduate students who represent the values he cherishes will have the opportunity to receive one-year, $10,000 scholarships for study at the Savannah College of Art and Design.”
“Through my involvement with SCAD, I have met many hardworking students,” said Eckburg. “They have so impressed me with their talent and creativity that Judy and I believe this would be a good way to help them reach their goals.”
In order to receive the scholarship, a student must apply and be accepted to SCAD and must demonstrate financial need, academic merit and/or artistic excellence, and service to the community. In addition, a student must meet or exceed normal SCAD admission standards and be an American citizen. Recipients may attend any SCAD campus.
Eckburg scholarships are renewable for up to four years as long as the recipient is a full-time undergraduate student, continues to meet the scholarship criteria and maintains a 3.0 grade point average.
“The Eckburgs are making it possible for others to achieve in life, and it’s a blessing for Savannah Christian Preparatory School and those interested in pursuing a career in the arts,” said Roger Yancey, headmaster at SCPS.
Eckburg was the recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree in 2003 and the 2004 Pepe Award recipient for his service to the college. Judy Eckburg has long been interested in fabric design and fashion. Last fall at the college’s Founders’ Day celebration, the Eckburg family was recognized for their leadership and generous support with the dedication and naming of Richard and Judy Eckburg Hall. A three-story Queen Anne Revival built in 1892 and located at 115 Henry St., Eckburg Hall houses the fashion department.
In the event that there are an insufficient number of qualified applicants from SCPS, students who have graduated from a high school within a 200-mile radius of the city of Savannah will be considered for the award. Applicants from SCPS must provide written letters of recommendation from the current headmaster with their scholarship application. Scholarship applications are available in the upper school’s college counselor’s office.
SCAD is the largest art and design college in the nation and was recently named "Hottest for the Study of Art" among America’s 25 Hottest Colleges by the Kaplan/Newsweek college guide. SCAD now has locations in Atlanta, Savannah and Lacoste, France. Online programs are offered through SCAD e-Learning.
