Savannah Christian Middle School hosted Buddy Ball Basketball for physically challenged children from Memorial’s Bacchus Children’s Hospital Pediatric Rehabilitation Dept. on Tuesday, February, 21st. The Buddy Ball program is a joint effort between Savannah Christian and Memorial to provide fun and exciting athletic activities for physically challenged children. Approximately eighty SCPS Middle School students participated, including most of the players from all six basketball teams, the cheerleading squad, and Beta Club members.
The Buddy Ball event got off to a rousing start with a great performance from the SCPS cheerleaders who set a fun and exciting tone for the afternoon. The basketball games between the Savannah Christian Raiders and the Bacchus Bears began with our 8th grade boys and girls basketball players providing both the opposition and the Buddies for physically mobile Bacchus Bears team. The Bacchus Bears showed tremendous effort, good shooting and rebounding and easily won the six-minute game. The next game was a three-on-three wheelchair basketball contest, with our 8th graders again serving as both the competition and the Buddies. The Bacchus Bears in their powered wheelchairs made easy work of the eighth graders who used manual wheelchairs provided by the Pediatric Rehabilitation Department. The Bacchus Bears homechair advantage overcame the Raiders homecourt advantage!
The wheelchair game was followed by a series of short scrimmages between the 8th grade boys and girls basketball teams, then the 7th grade basketball teams, and then our 6th grade teams. The cheerleaders performed with two Bacchus Bears girls joining in the cheer routine.
The Middle School’s Athletic Booster Club also put in a tremendous effort, grilling hamburgers and hot dogs, and providing drinks, chips and desserts to all the participants and families. It was a wonderful afternoon for everyone involved and a very good learning experience for both the Bacchus Bears and Savannah Christian Raiders.
