With a soft, but determined voice, Herschel Walker - #34 of the Georgia Bulldogs and Heisman trophy winner -
joined the Raider football team at practice for about half an hour this afternoon and captivated the attention
and hearts our Raiders.
Sweat poured from every player and onlooker, but no complaints were heard as
Herschel spoke from his heart on life, his experiences and the
blessings that God has poured out on him and his family.
His enthusiasm for the game was evident,
but his belief in God and the greatness He gives to us when we work hard and remain a servant to Him
was the most powerful message that Herschel delivered at practice.
“Greatness on the field or off the field is a gift from God,” said Mr. Walker,
as he inspired the players to seek God above all things.
With the help of Kennedy Williams, a kindergarten student on the Chatham Parkway campus,
Herschel was presented a replica of the Savannah Christian gates on behalf of a grateful school.
SCPS coach Donald Chumley and SCPS parent Kevin Jackson both played football with Herschel at UGA.
Many thanks to Mr. Jackson for arranging Herschel's visit to the Raider team in preparation for their opening season
game against Calvary this coming Friday night at Westside Stadium.
