Super Saturday 2005 Was A Blast!

Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time and resources to make Super Saturday 2005 a success!
The cool morning weather was a nice surprise for mid-April, and then the sun shined for the rest
of the day. If you attended, you know how much fun it was; if you didn’t, here’s what you missed:
- There was something for children of all ages . . . from the climbing wall, generously sponsored
by Grainger Honda, to the sports moonwalk and “Li’l Swings,” to our Raider Alley games like Go Fish
and the “dreaded” Wet Sponge Throw. Herb and Ellie Pennington are remarkable volunteers, devoting
many hours to make sure the games were refurbished, the prizes bought and helpers in place.
We appreciate the efforts of Mrs. Melanie Shepherd and Mrs. Sherry LeBlang in encouraging National
Honor Society members to devote public service hours to Super Saturday. They are a tremendous help.
- The popular Plant Sale took the lawn beside the cafeteria and transformed it into a lush garden,
with everything from fountain grass to tomato plants for sale. Tony & Vicki Blocker of Chatham
Nurseries and Jean Rahn of Rahn’s Greenhouses supplied beautiful plant specimens. Chairman Janet
Stevenson worked tirelessly to ensure a successful pre-sale and Saturday event, and her efforts are,
as always, much appreciated.
- Our own “Elvis,” Upper School Bible teacher Dr. Donnie Brannen, entertained live onstage for
almost three hours, collecting tips for the Annual Fund for special requests. He was amazing!
- Our merchandise raffle made one lucky sixth-grader – Kaitlyn Reiter – the very happy winner
of a brand new Ocean Pacific cruiser bicycle. Other raffled merchandise included kites, a set of
nalgene sports bottles, a Best Buy gift card….and a giant tub of Cheese balls!
- Vendors provided sand-art crafts, spirit items and books; inside the cafeteria, Les Deloach
with brought Chick-Fil-A the coupon wheel, and Bill Shaw demonstrated and answered questions about
the his model trains as they whizzed around their tracks. New this year, SCPS grandparent
Donna Gilliland brought equipment and ingredients from her Maui Smoothie store in downtown
Savannah and made delicious fruit and yogurt concoctions all day! And the lines became so
long for face painting that we recruited students to come in and lend a hand. We found some
very talented face painters that way!
- And oh, the food! Barbequed chicken dinners were new this year, and there was barbeque pork,
just slow-cooked on campus the night before. And of course there were juicy Roger Wood
‘Great Grillers’ hot dogs and quality hamburgers from Western Sizzlin’ in Pooler, as well as subs,
pizza and everyone’s favorite carnival snacks: cotton candy, sno-kones and lemon swizzles!
Frank Craven with food purveyor PYA Monarch was kind to help us with donated food items,
as was DeWayne Thomas with Paper Chemical Supply, who donated paper products. SCPS Business Manager and
Grandparent Mary Redding dons yet another hat each spring when she orchestrates the
Super Saturday concessions from beginning to end. She is truly amazing. Special thanks
go to Sandi Morgan of our cafeteria staff for supervising the work in the kitchen that day.
Thanks also to Coastal Chevrolet for supplying the Raider Red & White concessions tent!
- Our 2005 Super Saturday “Surfer” T-shirts were the biggest sellers in history! There are some
shirts left from our extended sale. If you’d like to reserve one, visit the Business Office or
contact Amy Rhodes, arhodes@savcps.com or 234-1653 ext. 107.
Super Saturday is a collaborative event that nets great benefits not only in money raised for the
Annual Fund, but also in fellowship and friendships created and strengthened among our SCPS family
members over the years. Everyone has a great time. Hope to see you next year!
