Students at Chatham Parkway in grades 3-12 recently enjoyed visits from the “Dog Doctors.”
These canine physicians are 100-pound Bernese Mountain Dogs, a breed that traces its origin to the mountains of
Switzerland.
The “Dog Doctors” are part of a community outreach program of the University of Georgia College of Veterinary
Medicine. Dr. Paige Carmichael, an associate professor in the pathology department at the school, travels
throughout Georgia with the dogs and her student assistants to talk about veterinary science and the roles
that these and other animals play in the research used to fight human and animal diseases.
The presentations were fun and informative, with Dr. Carmichael’s student assistants showing samples of animal
bones and radiographs (x-rays) of different animals. Students were able to ask questions about the dogs,
Dr. Carmichael’s genetic research and careers in pathology and veterinary medicine. Then came the best part
for most of the students: Playing with the dogs!
