Budding artists, writers and musicians will be showcased in the third annual
Reflections art show to be held Tuesday, March 4, 2003 from 7-9 pm at
Savannah Christian Preparatory School. A 6 pm band and chorus concert by
students in 5th through12th grades will precede the reception. Both events
are at the school’s Chatham Parkway campus and are free and open to the
public.
Sponsored by the school’s Council for Arts and Academics, Reflections seeks
to increase awareness of the importance of the arts in education. The show
challenges students to use their critical thinking skills as well as their
creative talents to produce original works of art that support a specific
theme.
This year’s theme is “Miracles of the Mind.” Students from 6th through 12th
grades are encouraged to submit original works in the areas of painting,
photography, sculpture, writing, music composition and web design. Pieces
submitted in each category are judged by local experts in the different
disciplines on artistic merit, creativity and interpretation of the theme.
This year’s judges include artists Rebecca Cope and Robert Isley,
photographer Gregory Williams and members of the Landings Writers Guild.
Entries will be judged during the weekend prior to the show.
In addition to Reflections, the Council for Arts and Academics recently
sponsored the third annual Artz Blitz for Middle and Upper school students.
Artz Blitz is held for one week, during one class period each day.
Students selected short courses from such diverse areas as hip-hop dance,
photojournalism, drama, human figure drawing, voice, and orienteering. Over
twenty different courses were available. Local artists, instructors and
interest groups shared their time and talents to challenge students’
creative skills.
