Legacy Capital Campaign
We continue to move toward successfully matching $7.5 million dollars
available in matching gifts. More than 320 SCPS families and friends
have committed nearly $2.4 million so far. If you have not yet sent in your gift or pledge,
please consider doing so as soon as possible! We are particularly seeking gifts and pledges over up to
a five-year period. Our PHONATHON to all current parents is still in progress.

1 - Total number of constituents in each category.
2 - Number who have made a donation or pledge at this point.
3 - Apportioned amounts committed so far. If a family has students in more than one school division,
the family’s gift “credit” is equally divided between the divisions their students attend. Also, for purposes of
accounting for support by our different constituencies, gifts from persons with multiple constituencies count more than
once in this chart, but only once in the overall total. For example, for a parent who is also an alumnus and an employee,
their total gift amount is counted in each appropriate column above, but only once in our overall total.
Construction and Planning Updates
- The new Upper School plans are complete, the Board is in the process of securing construction financing,
and the project should go out to bid in the next couple of months, with groundbreaking anticipated some time this summer.
- The current main Upper School building will be getting a new roof and a face-lift during the summer months.
- The new Daycare/Preschool facilities and grounds are almost complete and should be ready for occupancy by July.
- As our current 5-Year Long-range Plan comes to a close this year, the Board is working to conduct a new
strategic planning process this coming fall, which will involve interviews with representatives from administration,
faculty/staff, parents, students, and alumni. Watch for more information when school starts back.
Project Manager Hired
Joseph Smith has been hired as SCPS Project Manager, Owner's Representative for the remaining time of our outstanding
construction projects (estimated two years). Mr. Smith comes to us with 26 years experience in project management,
23 of those with the Housing Authority of Savannah (1984-2007) having planned and coordinated all new construction projects,
developing budgets for new construction and capital improvements, reviewing and approving contractor's pay requests, serving
as Contract Administrator for over $80,000,000 in capital improvements, inspecting work in progress to insure compliance
with plans and specifications, etc. We welcome Mr. Smith and look forward to benefiting from his experience.

2008 Gala Report
The picturesque Savannah River at sunset was the backdrop for Savannah Christian’s fifth annual Gala,
which was held Saturday, April 26th at the Hyatt Regency Savannah. Several hundred guests gathered
to enjoy the expansive Silent Auction and Big Board area, feverishly bidding on more than 220 items donated to
SCPS from parents, alumni, alumni parents and friends of the school.
New this year, we had precious grade-level
pictures taken of our lower school students that were framed and matted, and included each student’s signature.
We also had items from unique hand-painted chairs to the latest technology in home entertainment.
Dinner guests enjoyed the beautiful ballroom, accented by breathtaking flowers, and delectable beef tenderloin
and Savannah crab cakes.
The Live Auction once again did not disappoint in the level of excitement and entertainment.
A surprise item included a beautiful Gretsch guitar autographed by SCPS friend and supporter, Gregg Allman,
along with an opportunity to meet
the musician from the Allman Brothers Band. The excitement was contagious and hit an all new high as the Gala guests
received a quick lesson and demonstration on our SmartBoards from Mrs. Angie Briotta. You could hear a pin drop as
the guests saw the equipment in motion. Bidding was opened and instantly paddles went up as guests purchased numerous
SmartBoards to be placed in classrooms by this Fall! Our coaching staff, led by Coach Donald Chumley, also shared information
on equipment needed for the Eckurg Center workout rooms. Once again the paddles rose to applause, and donations
continued to come in, even after the auction, as Dick and Judy Eckburg graciously committed to purchase fifteen power racks
to equip the new workout room in the Eckburg Center.
A fun dance to great beach music wrapped up the event that once again can be described as a true
success for each and every SCPS student.
The sponsors, donors, attendees, and volunteers each deserve a huge round of applause for making
this amazing evening such a success. Please take a moment to review the lists below of very special volunteers
and sponsors who helped make this possible.

New Raider
Lauren Potter, who teaches Kindergarten at our DeRenne Campus, and her husband, Nathan, welcomed Addison Brooke Potter
(Addy) on March 9, 2008 at 2:04 p.m. She was 10 days early! Mrs. Potter wrote that she and Nathan “are both thrilled
and fell instantly in love with her. The triage nurse who took care of me when we first arrived was our friend Canas'
mother, and she was wonderful. An SCPS parent was the nurse who coached us and took care of us during the labor and
delivery. She was absolutely sent to us from the Lord!”
Upper School Shares With Lower School
Upper School Fine Arts Students recently displayed their artwork as an installation piece in the Lower School
Chatham Parkway Library. The students studied sculpture and were given an assignment to make an "assemblage" sculpture
of a sea creature. The requirements were that it had to be made from an assembly of found items and it had to be a sea
creature, either real or imagined. The artwork was hung from the ceiling
as well as displayed on the top of the bookshelf. The Lower School students are enjoying the display and are already
picking out their favorites. One student was heard to remark "the library is a fun place to be."
SCPS Holds First Movie Premiere!
By Sherry Schomburg
On Friday, April 25, the Pre-Kindergarten was treated to a premiere showing of The Muppet Movie.
Mrs. Stembridge’s Theater Production class transformed the Eckburg Center into a classic Hollywood movie theater,
complete with red carpet, “movie stars”, and paparazzi! The Pre-K students were treated like royalty as they were
served popcorn and juice and given the opportunity to mingle with the “movie stars”. Then, after the “movie stars”
went back to their work, the students sat back and enjoyed The Muppet Movie. A great time was had by all!
National Day of Prayer
Lower School students, faculty and staff participated in a special time of prayer for the nation on Thursday, May 1st
to recognize the National Day of Prayer on both campuses. Students, faculty and staff gathered at the school flagpoles
to pray for the leadership of the country and the men and women in the service who are continuing to make our freedom
possible by their sacrifice.
PreK/K Field Day
P.E. teachers Mr. Dewey Hooper and Mrs. Deedee Colter organized several days of athletic events for our Lower School
students. Ably assisted by large groups of parent volunteers, each day included a variety of athletic activities, and
ended with tug-of-war among the classes on each grade level.
Band Concert
All fifth grade band participants joined together under the capable leadership of Dr. Bill Denton to open the Spring
Band Concert on Thursday evening, April 17th in the Eckburg Center. The students have done extremely well this year as
they have only been playing and learning their instruments since November. We are looking forward to having them perform
again at the last chapel program when we recognize our “graduating” fifth grade students.
Administrative Assistants’ Day
SCPS administrators celebrated Administrative Assistants’ Day on Wednesday, April 23rd by treating a numbor of our staff
to a luncheon at the Hyatt Regency. We are very grateful for the assistance they provide and SCPS on a daily basis,
and this luncheon was a splendid way to say “thank you.”
Volunteer Thank-you Breakfasts
Thank you breakfasts were held at DeRenne and Chatham Parkway to thank the many parent volunteers who have worked
so tirelessly to make this school year so successful and fun. They have helped in libraries, classrooms, on PTF Boards,
with special events and activities, and with classroom parties for special holidays. Breakfast at DeRenne was coordinated
by Mrs. Ellen Ellington, Lower School Office Administrator, and on Chatham Parkway by teachers Mrs. Lynn Wright and Mrs.
Katie Peavley. Over 140 volunteers were invited to share in a delicious breakfast and receive a small SCPS tote bag from
the teachers and staff of the Lower School.

Edenfield Accepted into SURF Program
With Lauren Jensen, Marine Educator, SURF Program
Clayton Edenfield recently joined two other SCPS Middle School students - Andrew Horton and Donny Williams -
in a unique program at the UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island entitled "Students
Understanding Resources for the Future (SURF)." A total of 20 middle school
students from the Savannah area are participating in the program.
SURF students have been attending hands-on, field and onsite learning sessions at the UGA Aquarium
two to three Saturdays per month since November 2007. So far, they have dissected estuarine fish, transected marshes,
compared barrier island habitats on Wassaw Island, surveyed Atlantic bottlenose dolphins in the local waterways, explored
archaeology sites, and collected fish species and abundance data aboard the R/V Sea Dawg. The SURF program will continue
through the summer, finishing with a week-long Summer Research Institute in July.
SURF is funded by a Department of Natural Resources Coastal Incentive Grant, so the students are
participating in this program for free. They were randomly selected from a lottery, after applying for the program
last October. At the moment, the program has not been funded beyond the 2007-08 year.
Guest Artist Visits Campus
Josh Hill was born in Biloxi, Mississippi. He moved to Savannah in 1996.
Josh now resides in Savannah with his wife Laurie, son Caleb, daughters
Rachel and Hannah. Both Caleb and Rachel attend SCPS. Hannah will start
Kindergarten next year.
Josh Hill has been painting oil on canvas since 1987 and watercolors since
1995. In 1995 he began painting as a decorative artist. Josh says he enjoys
color and how colors work not only visually but also how color affects
people's feelings. Color can lift, calm, excite and give insight into
people. Josh hopes to master his knowledge of color in order to communicate
with the world around him. During Josh's painting career he has been
influenced by many artists. The three main artists are Van Gogh, Matisse,
and Picasso. Josh says that Van Gogh's brush strokes are most like his own,
hurried and confident, he does not mimic Van Gogh's techniques, but tries to
understand the nature of them and then applies this to his own work.
Josh provides services such as faux finishes, painted furniture, murals, oil
on canvas, watercolors, and mixed media three-dimensional artwork. Color
consulting along with design and decorative advice for customers is also available.
Special Olympics
On Wednesday, April 2, Donnie Foster and Josh Lawhon volunteered with Special Olympics in Savannah. Through a golf
venue at Bacon Park Course, these young men learned about the importance of giving their time to others through
volunteering. They were responsible for running one of the golf stations for the severely handicapped middle and
high school students in the public school system. This was yet another opportunity for the school and family to partner
in “Developing the Whole Person to the Glory of God.”
Europe by SMARTBOARD
During spring break this year, Mark Reavis, a student in Mrs. Cheri Acree’s Science class, had the extraordinary
opportunity to visit his uncle Wesley Lynah '97 in Warsaw and Krakow, Poland and Berlin, Germany. Adam Taulbee '97
also traveled with Mark on his visit. Using our latest technology, the SmartBoard, Mark discussed the history of
the region, as well as the present culture of Poland and Berlin, Germany. Mathematical, historical and scientific
facts were presented. Particularly touching to students was the discussion of the Holocaust.
Literary Chapel Reading Awards
A special Literary Chapel was held at the middle school on Wednesday, April 2nd. The purpose was to recognize,
reward and encourage excellence in reading and writing. After an opening prayer by Ellison Helmly, Abbie Deloach
presented a devotional which discussed the Bible being the greatest piece of literature ever written. Abbie wrote
this devotional especially for the Literary Chapel . . .

8,000 lbs of Cat and Dog Food!
The Middle School Student Government sponsored a Humane Society Food Drive called "Have a Heart." The students
donated approximately 4 tons of cat and dog food and had a total school participation of 42%. The student government
representatives and officers helped load a large Humane Society truck with the collected food on April 10th.
Our students once again showed that they have a great heart and generous spirits!

| Bands Compete at Heritage Festival -
SCPS 6th and 7th/8th bands recently performed, played, and worshiped in Orlando, Florida (photos submitted by Ron Josey) |

On April 12th both the Sixth Grade Band and the Seventh/Eighth Grade Band
performed in competition in Orlando Florida at the Heritage Festival. Both
bands did very well receiving straight superiors, the highest possible
rating. In the Middle School division, the Seventh/Eighth Grade Band
received first place and the Sixth Grade Band received second place.
It was not all work and no play however. Saturday evening the students and
their courageous chaperones shared a cool evening at Wet 'n Wild where they
enjoyed short lines, a hotdog/hamburger buffet and a rowdy awards ceremony.
The next morning a bushy tailed but not so bright eyed bus full went to the
Discovery Church where they enjoyed a contemporary service with great music
and a terrific message. The sermon was on marriage, and while the students
may not have found it relevant, perhaps someday the pastor's words will come
back to them when they need them most.
After church it was off to Universal Studios. I think the students had a
good time. Dr. Denton's favorite rides were "The Mummy" and "Terminator
3-D".
Reflections 2008
Reflections 2008 proved to be yet another successful project sponsored by the Savannah Christian Preparatory
School’s Council for Arts and Academics. Following many hours of hard work and much preparation by the members, hundreds
of items painted, sewn, pasted, drawn, fastened, or otherwise prepared by the students were placed entered into the
competition. Congratulations are in order for everyone who entered; however, the following students received special
recognition for their entries:
- HEADMASTER'S AWARD - Hannah Herrington, 8th Grade
According to Lee Brantley, Middle School art teacher, Ruth Mathis, Upper School art teacher, said that this was the
first year this award was open to Middle School students, and she wasn’t sure she was going to keep it that way after
Hannah won – just kidding, of course. Mrs. Brantley told her not to worry, since she will have Hannah next year.
Mrs. Brantley also shared that Hannah had only taken up drawing about a year ago and has had no formal training.
Hannah’s mother became teary-eyed when Mrs. Brantley showed her her daughter’s artwork and award.

Alumni Updates
Anne Tyson Jackson '52 lives with her husband Bill in Anaheim, California and writes,
"Wow! When I think back to the history of the school and the God-given privilege to have been involved and a part
of it all, I consider it one of the richest blessings of my life. I am so thankful that God gave me a chance to be
a part of this and now see how He has used (and continues to use) it all to his Glory. As you may recall, I was among
the first students in 1951 and subsequently the first graduate.
The most recent copy of The Raider brought back memories and also brought me up to date
with the progress and history. It is amazing and such a legacy to the faithfulness
of God. When I see those precious faces of children, who have the chance to study with Godly teachers and to know
our God in these times, it restores my soul and the hope within me for our future generations.
My husband, Bill, and I want to be a part of this and are pledging to the Legacy Capital Campaign.
We are looking forward to visiting the campus on our next trip to Savannah. I remember sitting in an
open room in the tabernacle fasting and praying for this school and this work and GOD IS STILL ANSWERING THESE PRAYERS!"
