News and Updates
By Wanda McIntire and Karen Graham
March was a busy month for our Daycare/Preschool. We took advantage of the March winds by flying kites and enjoying the breezes. The children heard stories of Ireland and the leprechauns and painted shamrocks. The main focus of the month was on Transportation. The children along with their parents created their own vehicles out of cardboard boxes. They paraded their creations on March 24 through the halls of the lower school and the high school. The pictures included with this update prove the enthusiasm that was put into this event.
Another project in March was the Book It Program for Beginners. With this program the children recorded each book that was read to them or that they read. Several parents, grandparents and other relatives came and read books to the classes. The children really enjoyed this. They always like having visitors. This program will continue into April. At the end of each of these two months the children will receive a certificate for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.
The students have been welcoming Spring by singing songs and exploring the signs of new life outdoors. In Bible, they heard the glorious story of Easter as told by Mrs. Peggy and her story eggs. On March 30 and 31 the Easter Bunny visited the students. They each had their picture taken with the floppy-eared character.
Coming in April we will be having our Trike-a-Thon for St. Jude’s Research Center. The children will bring their bikes and ride them around the high school track. This event will take place on April 21. The children have been feeling the “Spring in the air” and are looking forward to the warmer weather and more time outdoors.

Bye, bye, long hair: Erin Barksdale before (left) and after (above) she cut her
hair for Locks Of Love |
SCPS Students in Jump Rope for Heart raise nearly $32,000!
Lower School students recently participated in Jump Rope for Heart to benefit the American Heart Association.
SCPS 1st-5th Lower School students have participated in this charitable fundraiser for years.
This year, Kindergarteners were included in the event, in which teams of students take turns jumping rope
for a certain length of time while other teams cheer them on. Students obtain pledges from
sponsors to raise the money. An estimated 600+ (more than 90%) lower school students participated this year to
raise nearly $32,000 to donate to the American Heart Association!
Locks of Love
DeRenne Avenue 5th grader Erin Barksdale recently cut her hair for “Locks of Love.” Erin purposely grew her hair
longer to cut for children who have cancer and lose their own hair due to chemo. Erin cut about ten inches
off of her hair, packaged it and mailed it in. She is thinking about growing her hair long again to cut just for this cause.

Oatland Island Campout
The DeRenne fifth graders broke a record recently during their annual January campout by enduring the coldest night ever spent by a group at Oatland Island - 28 degrees!
In addition to enjoying a (very cold) night hike with no flashlights in the woods, the group attended classes on
animal classification, endangered species, and group challenge. The group challenge activities included
wall climbing, rope swinging, physical challenges, and problem solving.
Students also had to assemble their own two-man tents, collect firewood, build a fire and cook their own meals.
Mrs. Angie Ivey is their brave 5th grade teacher.

| Pack #10 sitting at the WJCL news desk |
Districts were held on Saturday, March 18th at St. James Catholic Church. Although the boys did not place at the
District races, they exhibited true sportsmanlike conduct and congratulated the winners.
In March, Pack #10 also visited WJCL and Cumulus Radio on Television Circle. At WJCL, meteorologist Jeff Kirk gave them a tour of the studio. Each boy also got to try their hand at giving the weather report for the day -- a definite highlight! The boys were interested in all of the buttons in the control room and were fascinated by seeing their faces on the television cameras.
At Cumulus, the boys met several radio personalities including Big Mack of Kix 96. They recorded
"The Pledge of Allegiance" which was played several times on air during the next few days!

Muscular Dystrophy Association Fundraiser
The Middle School Student Government recently collected an amazing $2123.10
in donations from the student body to support the Muscular Dystrophy
Association! This money will allow MDA to send three children to a camp
designed to meet their unique needs, as well as provide the funding for two
support group meetings and four flu shots. Thank you to our generous Middle
School students and families!
Marine Education Field Trip
The 7th grade accelerated science class recently participated in a wonderful educational experience.
The UGA Marine Education Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island invited the students to take part in the development
of a new 7th grade class on echinoderms (sea stars.) In preparation, students researched the life habits of sea stars,
and particularly of the purple sea star, Luidia clathrata. On March 30, we traveled to the Marine Education Center to
take part in a hands-on lab which tested the sensory and locomotor behavior of the sea star. The lab provided students
the opportunity to conduct studies with live animals and reinforced the steps and procedures of the scientific method.
In addition to the echinoderm lab, students also completed a fish taxonomy lab, where they reviewed basic fish morphology
and identified several species of fish.
Relay for Life is Approaching!
Momentum is building for this year’s Relay for Life because students and faculty alike are passionate
about keeping alive the cause that meant so much to their teacher and friend, Ms. Julie Rossiter, who died recently
of cancer. Many members of the extended Savannah Christian family may be committed the fight to find a cure for
cancer as well, and would welcome an opportunity to support the American Cancer Society through the Middle School’s
efforts. If you would like to contribute financially, please bring your donation to the Middle School office before
the next “turn-in” date, April 21st.
Additionally, thank you to the many parents of team members who have volunteered to assist the Relay team in
practical ways. You will be contacted within the next few weeks with specific details on how you can participate.
In the meantime, please encourage your child to continue their efforts and bring their donations in by the 21st!

Botball
By Lisa Kavanaugh and Jill Sharma
SCPS captured 2nd place at the annual Georgia Regional Botball tournament Saturday, April 1st. Students are given about seven weeks to design, build, program a team of mobile, autonomous robots and create a website documenting their process. Participants compete against each other on a 4’ x 8’ playing field in a fast paced, non-destructive regional tournament. The robots are student built and programmed to maneuver on the game board without the need for remote control.

| Botball team members
(L-R, front) Emi Rendon-Pope, Jennie Murphy, Jill Sharma and (back row)
Lenae Simpson, Stephen Thompson, Robert Daniel, and sponsor Lisa Kavanaugh |
After a rocky start, the robot “Bink” performed well in the seeding round, capturing 2nd seed.
In head to head competition, the SCPS autonomous robot out scored every opponent except one – taking the contest
to the final round before being defeated by Entworth of Tennessee in 2 out of 3 matches giving us an overall 2nd
place team finish. In the documentation portion of the competition, the SCPS team earned a second place finish as well.
In a field of 10 teams from 7 schools located in Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina, SCPS is the only team that competes as an extracurricular club. The other schools incorporate the Botball competition as part of an academic class or exploratorium.
The 2006 team improved their 2005 6th place performance with the experience of returning members Morgan Lupton,
Emi Rendon Pope, Jill Sharma, Mark Stevenson, and Stephen Thompson along with the valuable assistance of newcomers
Robert Daniel, Olivia Dubberly, Jenny Murphy, Laura Simpson, Lenae Simpson and Jared Walton.
Botball is a hands-on learning experience in robotics designed to engage students in learning the practical applications of science, technology, engineering and math. Students interested in computer programming and robots are welcome to join us for the Fall Challenge in September 2006 to prepare for the competition season which begins in February 2007. Robots are constructed from limited Lego kits, motors, and sensors to act without remote guidance through computer programs written by the builders. Botball meets at lunch for 7-8 weeks in the fall and 7-8 weeks in the spring. Science teachers Amy Durden and Lisa Kavanaugh are the faculty sponsors. For more information, visit www.botball.org.
Eric Tzen update
SCPS Junior Eric Tzen collapsed after a light track practice Monday, March 27th and went into cardiac arrest.
Following quick action by SCPS staff and students, and a two-minute EMT response time, Eric survived, but spent
a week in a drug-induced coma in Pediatic ICU.
(4/2/06) Eric has not responded to a second attempt to bring him out of the coma. The most recent CT scan does
show brain damage. However, the good news is that he does bite down on the tubes, coughs, and opens his eyes
a little, but without focus.
(4/5/06) Eric’s level of sedation has been reduced, but he has still not regained consciousness.
A feeding tube will be inserted in his stomach this morning and a tracheotomy performed this afternoon.
The plan is to move Eric to Scottish Rite in Atlanta either Friday or Monday.
Let's please keep Eric and his precious family in our prayers.
Roger Yancey, Headmaster
Alex Fairbanks update
Alex endured an invasive traction procedure March 26th in New York that was hoped would cure Alex.
Although the procedure did not work, the doctors did discover an entangled mass of blood vessels around a
major brain artery. Surgeons at the Chiari Institute are currently reviewing Alex's brain scans to map out a
solution plan for recovery as soon as possible. Alex's prayer beeper number is 495-6383. For more information, visit:
