| Daycare/Preschool |
|
News and Updates
By Wanda McIntire and Karen Graham
During November, the Daycare/Preschool has been sheathed in pictures and drawings of the First Thanksgiving.
The children have heard stories about this historical event. On any given Wednesday or Thursday, you could have
seen classes in Pilgrim hats, headbands with feathers, or turkey hats walking to Music class, where they re-enacted
in song the Native Americans hunting, and the Pilgrims fishing in the ocean and cooking the turkey.
They also pretended the groups were eating together, just as they did on that First Thanksgiving Day.
In the classrooms, the children made butter from whipping cream by shaking it in a baby food jar.
When they finished, they enjoyed their freshly made butter on crackers or bread.
The two year olds had a parade of Native Americans. As they walked
around the daycare, the twos played their drums and sang Ki-yi, Yi-ya, Ki-yi, Yi-ya. Many parents came to cheer on
their little ones. The three year olds were there also to encourage their friends.
Our “Operation Christmas Child” has come to a close. The brightly wrapped shoeboxes were prepared to be shipped
to deserving children the week of November 14. As our children brought in the items to be put in these boxes,
they were proud to show and tell their teachers about what they had brought. It was uplifting to see how they
were willing to share with others. This, after all, is the true spirit of Christmas.
Christmas will be upon us before we know it and the classes are preparing for their Christmas Program,
entitled “Let’s Dress Up For Christmas”. We promise this will be a delightful presentation. Information about
the time and date of the program will be sent home soon.
The PTF is currently selling Poinsettias and raffle tickets. Please consider buying these beautiful blooms
and a few tickets to help the Daycare purchase needed equipment.
We continue to enjoy working with your children. Watch for more news about us in next month’s E-Raider
and The Raider magazine.

Author Angela Hunt Visits SCPS’ Lower School
Christy-Award winner, Angela Hunt, visited SCPS’ DeRenne Campus on Tuesday, October 18th where she shared
with children her love for the Lord and her talent for writing as a witness for Christ. Ms. Hunt autographed
books and conducted a writing workshop for 2nd – 5th grade students.
Check the Winter 2005-2006 issue of The Raider magazine for more information about Ms. Hunt’s visit!
Hometown Heroes
2nd Lt. Joseph "Joey" Kistler is the brother of SCPS fourth Grader Patrick Kistler.
Joey, who formerly attended the SCPS Middle School and is a 2004 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy,
is presently serving in Iraq in the U.S. Marine Corp. Recently, Patrick's classmates each wrote letters
on Christmas paper to 2nd Lt. Kistler and sent them in hope of arriving in time for the holidays.
On November 11th, Mrs. Cathy Joyce’s fifth grade class presented the chapel for the Lower School in honor
of Veterans Day. Her class was supported by special guests from Armstrong Atlantic State University’s ROTC
program under the supervision of Master Sergeant Jones. The Color Guard “presented the colors” for the pledges
and Cadet Lisa Valeron talked to the students about the history of Veterans Day and its importance to us.
Cadet Valeron is engaged to Mrs. Joyce’s son, who is currently deployed in Iraq. She will enter the Army
in March as a nurse. Prior to the chapel letters were sent home asking parents to submit names of family
members who were/are veterans and/or family members who are currently deployed. These names were read by
Mrs. Joyce’s students to honor them for their service to our country.
On November 18, 2005 the Student Outreach of Chatham Parkway & DeRenne Lower School delivered food that has
been collected by the 2 campus to Safe Shelter, a home for battered and abused women and their children,
and to Union Mission, a facility that assist people recovering from drug and alcohol addictions. A total
of four truck loads of food was delivered and unloaded by our students. These organizations are not-for-profit
so all of our assistance was greatly needed and appreciated.
After delivering the food, the students enjoyed a picnic lunch in Johnson Square followed by a visit
to the Westin Resort and the Festival of Trees.
Grandparents' Day
They were hoppin and boppin to the sounds of the Hallelujah Hop! With leather jackets, poodle skirts and
slicked back hair the Pre-k- first graders at Chatham Parkway praised the Lord in a rockin style! With the
help of their teachers the kids put on a rousing show!
The program, produced by Brentwood Kids, is a collection of songs from the 50’s and 60’s.
The afternoon performance celebrated Saturday, a Day off in the Life of a Kid! The production by
Mac Huff & John Jacobson was a delightful representation of all the things kids enjoy and dislike about
Saturdays! Our 2nd-5th graders took us from watching TV and doing nothing all day, to going to the library,
shopping, taking piano lessons, football lessons and CHORES!! Mrs. Shaw again managed to put together a great
show with lots of excitement, energy and fun!
A reception held in the lower school gym topped off a great day. With beautiful decoration and a chocolate
fountain as the center attraction, our grandparents and special friends enjoyed an assortment of home made
and prepared goodies. Susan & Vance Reyes and their committee worked tirelessly to make this a very special
event. SCPS PTF would like to acknowledge the following for their donations to our special day:
- Resort Services, Inc.
- River Street Sweets
- Bernie’s
- Bernie’s T’s
- Sams Wholesale Club
- Harris Title & Research
- Fast Signs
We would also like to thank the following volunteers for their time and efforts in setting up, serving,
greeting, manning the treasure hunt and breaking down the reception: Janice Shiver, Tonya Rogers, Mary Kelley,
Diane McLeod, Car trice Lavant, Sarah Peterson, Lori Mallard, Angela Thomas, Julie Fales, Traci Frandy, Mary
Catherine McLean, Angie Arrowood, Mary Bauer, Kathy Korzik, Kelly Smith, Kathryn Brodmann, Debbie Smith,
Audra Barbour, Suzanne Smallwood, Andi Carter, Lynn Brennan, Joy Deal, Phillip Carter, Heather Godwin,
Tiffany Wissmach, Josey Coursey, Kim Carter, Christine Freeman. This event seems to get better each year
and we sincerely hope that our Grandparents and special friends felt as honored and treasured as we feel
they are!

Live It!
Beginning in January, all sixth grade physical education students will be participating in an exciting new
program called “Live It!” which encourages students to embrace a healthy, active lifestyle through two main avenues. First, “Step With It” focuses on the health benefits of staying healthy through any form of physical activity. Students will be encouraged to record at least 10,000 steps a day using a personal Stepometer™ measuring device and to continually increase daily activity levels. Second, “Fit It In” will emphasize a healthy nutritional lifestyle, educating students about the major food groups and encouraging them to eat nutritious meals as recommended by the USDA guidelines.
The “Live It!” physical activity and nutrition initiative has been developed by The Coca-Cola Company in
partnership with The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, the School Nutrition Association,
and the National Association for Sports and Physical Education. Thank you to the Coca-Cola Company for
providing the materials to our school for this valuable new program. We encourage parents to support your
children in this effort . . . who knows, perhaps taking walks with your child and sharing healthy meals together
may bring both health and relational benefits to the whole family!
Veterans Honored
On November 9th, Middle School students participated in a special assembly honoring our military veterans.
Opening activities included a devotion given by student Haley Martin, whose father is presently deployed to Iraq,
and the Pledge to the American Flag led by Lauren Wilson, whose mother is likewise deployed to Iraq. The Middle
School Chorus sang several patriotic songs, further setting the tone for this meaningful program.
Coordinated by Ms. Julie Rossiter and Miss Brenda Williams, the program included special guest
Lieutenant Colonel T. Frank Baker (Retired) who is presently the Wing Family Program Coordinator for the 165th
Airlift Wing and its Geographically Separated Units. LTC Baker shared information about the burdens placed on
families who have a father or mother on active duty in another country.
Chief Master Sergeant David C. Smith, the Command Chief Master Sergeant for the 165th Airlift Wing of the Georgia
Air National Guard, also spoke with the student body. CMS Smith advises the Commander on the state of the enlisted
force, including morale, welfare, and quality of life issues. He shared with the students the responsibilities he
faces on a day-to-day basis.
Together, LTC Baker and CMS Smith have given almost seventy-five years of service to their country. Both have
distinguished themselves through service to their community and have received numerous decorations and awards for
their military and civilian service. We are extremely grateful for their contributions, and for the sacrifice of
all of our military men and women both at home and abroad.
Peer Helpers Donate Funds
The Middle School Peer Helpers donated $100 of the proceeds from their Fall
Candy Sale to the Salvation Army to help with their Thanksgiving Day
ministry to the poor.
MS Student Government Elections
The Middle School encourages the development of leadership and service within the student body through the
Student Government. Each fall, homerooms select candidates for the offices of President, Vice-President,
and Secretary/Treasurer. These students, along with other write-in candidates, campaign through putting
up posters, passing out badges, and ultimately, by preparing and giving speeches in front of the entire
student body. This experience provides a wonderful opportunity for students to develop both skills and
confidence that will serve them well in the future.
Congratulations to the 2005-2006 Student Government officers:
- President: Nicholas Cutsforth
- Vice-President: Deonnah Davis
- Secretary/Treasurer: Kiley Jackson
Also, congratulations to the 2005-2006 Student Government homeroom representatives:

Jackie Webber Wise (attended 1965-1966) writes, “My sister, brother and I attended SCPS at the original Chatham Parkway campus in 1965-66. We were dorm residents from West Palm Beach, Florida. None of us actually graduated since we only attended that year, although we have many memories . . . While we were there a girl's dorm and cafeteria/dining room were built. My brother Robert now lives in Huntsville, Alabama, and our sister Linda lives in Ft. Walton, Florida. My husband John and I have been married for 31 years and live in Birmingham, Alabama.
